Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the scenic locales of the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of Kerala. Set in the tranquil surroundings of Kerala, and famous for its quite seashore, lush countryside and calm backwaters, is the wildlife sanctuary in Periyar. The Periyar Lake, a man-made lake formed due to creation of a dam in 1895 AD adds to the beauty of the park. The lake is an enduring source of water for the wildlife. The park was included in the Project Tiger in 1972. There is estimated to be 40 tigers in the sanctuary.
