Temples of Kanchipuram
As one of the seven religious cities of India, Kanchipuram housed thousand temples of which nearly 200 are extinct. These temples reflect the Pallava art and architecture with the decorations from the Chola, the Vijayanagara and Chalukyas kings.
Ekambaranathar Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ekambaranathar Temple was constructed by the Pallavas and thereafter reconstructed by the Chola and Vijayanagar kings. It is one of the tallest temples of South India reaching upto eleven stories and consists of numerous awe-inspiring statues.
Vaikuntha Perumal Temple
Dating back to the 8th century, Vaikuntha temple was built by Nandivarma Pallava and devoted to Lord Vishnu. The walls of the temple depict scenes from the battle waged by Pallava kings which have been carved on the panels encircling the main parikrama of this Vaishnavite temple.
Varadaraja Temple
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is worshipped as Devarajaswamy here. This temple has a 100-pillared hall, built by the Vijayanagar kings depicting the skillfulness of their artists.
Kailasanathar Temple
The Pallava kings constructed the Kailasanathar Temple somewhere around the the 8th century AD. It has a captivating panel portraying Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in various dance positions. The architecture of this temple resembles the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram.
Kamakshi Amman Temple
Dedicated towards goddess Parvati within her incarnation as Kamakshi, the goddess of Love, this is one of the three holy continent of Shakti worship within India. The else two are within Madurai and Varanasi. The Cholas constructed the temple within its show form, during the 14th century AD.
