Sariska in Rajasthan - Sariska is located in
a valley surrounded by barren mountains. The dry deciduous forests of
the ancient Aravalli range cover the area of the Sariska Wildlife
Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. The best way to tour the Sariska Wildlife
Sanctuary is by jeep. If you are adventurous in nature, you could also
book a 'hide', overlooking one of the waterholes. All you need is to
pick up your sleeping bag and some food and settle down to watch. The
places of interest in Sariska are:
Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary - The main fauna in the park includes
the Tiger, Panther, Hyena, Jungle Cat, Civet, Sambhar, Chinkara, Nilgai
and Four-Horned Antelope. The other great predator of Sariska's forests
is the leopard besides the ferocious tiger. Sariska has a healthy
porcupine population, and this tiny creature often pits itself against
the tiger, which is particularly fond of porcupine flesh. The birdlife
comprises of the Pea Fowl, Gray Partridge, Quail, Sandgrouse, Tree Pie,
White-Breasted Kingfisher, Golden-Backed Woodpecker, Crested Serpent,
Eagle and Great Indian Horned Owl.
Sariska Palace - A beautiful palace, it was built by Maharaja
Jai Singh, now converted into a heritage hotel.
Kankwari Fort - Inside the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, this fort
has its own tale as Emperor Aurangazeb had imprisoned his brother Dara
Sikoh here.
Temples - The ruins of medieval Hindu temples dedicated to Lord
Shiva are found within the park. The ruins of the 10th century AD temple
Garh-Rajor are scattered all over the forest.
