Bikaner


Bikaner is known for its majestic fort, rolling sand-dunes and camels. Historically, Bikaner was on the famous caravan trade route that came from Central/ West Asia. Rao Bhikaji, the descendant of the founder of Jodhpur, established his kingdom in this region. Rao Bhikaji chose a barren wilderness and transformed it into an impressive city that was christened after him.

Bikaner is known for having the best camels in the world. An inseparable part of Bikaner, camels are seen everywhere. Be it pulling heavy carts, transporting grains or working on wells, camels are the prime helpers of the local farmers and residents.

Places To See in Bikaner :
Junagarh :
The Junagarh Fort was built by Raja Rai Singh, a general in Akbar's army. Though the fort is not built over a hill top, it is as imposing as other forts in Rajasthan. The fort has a 986 meter wall with 37 bastions, a moat and two entrances. The palaces within the fort are on the southern side and make a picturique ensemble of courtyards, balconies, kiosks, towers and windows. A major feature of the Bikaner fort and palaces is the superb quality of stone carving.

Lal Garh Palace - An architectural masterpiece in red sandstone, the palace was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh. The palace is known for its beautiful lattice work and filigree. Parts of the palace has been converted into a hotel and a museum. The Shri Sadul Museum contains old photographs and trophies of wildlife.

Deshnok's Karni Mata's Temple - Dedicated to Goddess Durga, this 600 year old temple was where Rao Bhikaji sought blessings before embarking on his campaigns. The temple is known for have hundreds of rats that move around freely. They are regarded as sacred and are fed by priests and devotees owing to the belief that they will be reincarnated as holy men.

Camel Research Farm - Bikaner is known as the 'Camel Country'. The city has the world's first Camel Research Farm. The farm rears more than 200 camels belonging to three different breeds.
