Fair Overview
Known as the main fair of Bikaner and is held on Kartik Poornima. One
of the 52 ghats of the Kolayat Lake is the Kapil Muni ghat and has a
temple dedicated to the sage Kapil who is said to have meditated at this
place for the salvation of the humans. The temple has a marble statue of
Kapil Muni. It is regarded as a great pilgrimage place and one day visit
here holds as much importance as spending 10 years at any other holy
place. Hoards of people come here to take a dip in the holy water of the
Kolayat Lake at the time of the Kapil Muni fair which is
supposed to wash off devotees sins. There are many miracles
connected with the area telling stories of rebirth and of sages who
faltered and were saved. This belief still lingers to keep the fair
going on.
Information on Kapil Muni Fair
A lot of people belonging to various communities release lighted lamps
in the lake which is considered as a part of one the rituals and this
also gives it a beautiful look. Some offer coconut, flowers, fruits,
cash and sugar cubes in respect. At the time of the Kapil Muni fair a
cattle fair is organized. The main animals traded during this fair are
buffaloes, camels, horses and cattle. There is also a prize distribution
ceremony where awards and prizes are given to those who breed the
domestic animals the best.
How to reach Kapil Muni Fair in Bikaner, Rajasthan
The venue of the fair is Kolayat. It is located approximately 50 kms to
the southwest of Bikaner. There is a direct railway route from Bikaner
to Kolayat.
