Lal Niwas, constructed in 1750 is an elaborately engraved haveli made of bright red sandstone and is a luxury hotel now. Spacious courtyards, conventional jharokhas, jaalis and splendid interiors speak volumes of an era gone by. Artefacts, chandeliers, cut-glass work and rare weaponry provide an insight into the rich heritage of the owners.
Phalodi Fort was constructed by Rao Hammir Narawat in 1488 AD. Significant temples in the area include Jambaji Temple, located a few kilometres away .The Temple of Ramdevra at Osiyan, located 62 Km away is a famous Jain pilgrimage centre and hoiuses ancient idols dating back to 8th century. The famous temples here are Sachiya Mata Temple, Mahavira Temple and the Sun Temple.The local bazaars are laden with traditional jootis, bangles, beaded jewellery including Bishnoi-style necklaces. Osiyan provides the itinerant tourists facilities to stay in rented tents right on the sand dunes, besides camel rides in the desert.
Bird Watchers can visit Khican, just 5 Km from Phalodi, which Khican is a haven for the migratory Demoiselle Cranes which travel all the way from the colder climes of South Western Europe, Poland and Ukraine.Believed to be founded in the 15th century, the lesser known town of Phalodi was originally ruled by Rao Maldev Rathore of Jodhpur. Phalodi has all the usual elements that you can expect in a desert town of Rajasthan.
The parched landscape is dotted with ancient Hindu and Jain temples, red and white sandstone havelis and street bazaars. The small town is not as popular as compared to its neighbours of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, and is a true showcase of untouched charms. Today the town is known for its besides being home to the Rajasthan Canal Project Colony.
