Guwahati, the capital city of the north-eastern state of Assam, was previously known as Pragjyotishpur (the City of Eastern Light).Nestled between the scenic hills of the eastern flanks of the Himalayan mountain range, Guwahati houses the political capital of the state, Dispur. The doorway to the seven other north-eastern states, Guwahati is a critical tourist link point, besides having a lure of its own.
There are numerous places to see and visit in and around Guwahati. Guwahati is chiefly renowned for the Kamakhya temple located atop the Nilachal hill, at a distance of 10 km from the railway station. Considered to be the most sacrosanct among the tantrik shrines of Shakti worship in the world, Kamakhya, was constructed in the 10th century by the Koch king, Naranarayan. There are quite a few places of tourist interest around Guwahati. These places prove to be admirable options for weekend trips and excursions from Guwahati. The Manas wildlife sanctuary, 176 km from the city, is located on the banks of river Manas. The Manas wild life sanctuary is the only tiger project of its kind in Assam.
The most noteworthy carnival in Guwahati is the Bohag Bihu, which marks the commencement of the Assamese New Year and falls sometime in mid-April. Various local dishes like pithas, larus, and other sweetmeats are available then. Guwahati is the junction of three significant roads, National Highways 31, 37 and 40. It is split into two parts by the passage of the river and North Guwahati is now almost a separate township. One can visit it via the Saraighat Bridge or by the ferries that ply on the river. The nearest metropolis is Kolkata (1152 km), while the capitals of the other north-eastern states are at distances varying from 110 km to 650 km.
