Basically a 'temple town', Bhubaneshwar draws from its title from Tribhuvaneswara or Shiva, the "Lord of the Three Worlds." Bhubaneshwar is one of three 'Golden Triangle sites of Orissa', other two towns are Puri and Konark. Bhubaneshwar has some intriguing tourist destinations that include:
Lingaraj Temple : Situated south of the Bindu Sagar, Lingaraj Temple is a significant temple of the town. Built during the 10 & 11th century, the temple is dedicated to Tribhubansehwar, the Lord of the Three Worlds. Bindu Sagar Lake is a sacred lagoon and it is said that it comprises the waters of all the sacred water bodies of the country. Every year in April, throughout the chariot carnival of Ashokatami the deity of the Lingaraj temple is immersed in the lagoon for an annual dip. Lingaraj Temple is shut for the non-Hindus but they are free to explore the temple from its ramparts and glimpse the superb architecture and sculptures.
Vaital Deul Temple : An intriguing temple, Vaital Deul Temple lies close to the Bindu Sagar.Built in 800 AD, the temple displays evidences of the Buddhist cave architecture. Vaital Deul Temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, a destructive incarnation of Goddess Kali. In this temple you will glimpse some of India's first erotic carvings, proposing that tantric convictions may have been first propagated here.Orissa State Museum : One of the foremost attractions of the town, the repository has a good assemblage of artefacts and anthropological specimens, musical instruments and archaeological finds like Jain and Buddhist sculptures.
