The town of Jabalpur was the capital city of the former medieval Gond rulers. It is not only a significant historical place, but it is also renowned for the Marble Rocks gorge on Narmada River, near it. It is an administrative and learning centre and is the gateway to some interesting wildlife sanctuaries around it. It is one of the key cities of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
Jabalpur, is 336 kms from Bhopal in the central region of Madhya Pradesh.Located on the upper reaches of the Narmada river, it is a rocky basin enclosed by low hills and is dotted with lakes. Another place to visit in Jabalpur is the Old Bazaar area. On the periphery of the town and en route to the Marble Rocks, one can visit the Madan Mahal. It is a Gond citadel constructed in 1116 and is perched atop a rocky hill, overlooking the city. The hill, on which this fortress is constructed, provides a panoramic view of Jabalpur city and its neighbourhood.
Jabalpur is a entryway to the Kanha National park (160 km south east of Jabalpur) and Bandhavgarh National park (197 km north east of Jabalpur) and most of the tourist use it as a base to travel to these wildlife parks The Marble Rocks, a gorge on the River Narmada, 22 km from Jabalpur, is a widely acclaimed tourist spot. The multi-coloured cliffs dotting the canyon offer an imposing sight. Travellers often visit the gorge at night to see the cliffs under moonlight. Tourists can enjoy the sight of these sheer cliffs on both side of the Narmada River on a shared rowboat, which takes the awestruck tourist through the 2-km-long gorge. One can see the cascading Dhuandhar waterfall near the gorge.
